Journal 1: 3 Sizes

This assignment was really technical adn so much different to the assignments we have done in the past. For this assignment we picked two images that were the same image but on two different speeds of film: 100 and 400. The picture I chose was of a green bench on my porch. It's not my favorite and by far not my best picture. But for this assigment it worked. For this assignment we were comparing the images for quality and grainyness by size. When I printed both of these at a small size, about 3x5, you couldn't even tell the difference. When I printed the two picturs at a medium size, about 8x10, I still couldn't really tell the difference between the two. The big difference happened when I printed them at a large scale, with the enlarger as high as it can go (within my reach). You could really see the grain in the 400. Overall I enjoyed this assignment because of the technicality in it. Although, I do still love all the creativity that comes with being in photo.

Final Project: Tattoos

My final project was on tattoos. One of the reason's I chose to do this project was because this term our photo class was all about color, and i wanted to incorperate color in this project. Tattoo's were a great opportunity for this project. I also chose to do tattoos, because they have an emotional side to them. They tell stories about the person who has been tattooed. One of my goals for this project was to get this emotional side of the person, from their tattoo, into the photo, and into the audience.

This is one of my favorite photos because first: it's in focus, and second: I really love the plain red background. The tattoo itself doesn't have color in it, but with the background it still incorperates color into the project.

Again, I like how the red background incorperates color into the picture, even though the tattoo is black and white.

So, i don't really count this in my final 10 images, but i put it up here anyway. The picture itself might not be that great....considering it's super blurry, and sort of grainy....(I'm not sure if my ISO was messed up, or if it's just the style of tattoo or something), but I love the story behind it. This is my cousin Christa, and the woman in the tattoo, is my grandmother....or at least her face is.... Christa says that she got this tattoo, because my grandmother is one of the most influencial people in her life and this tattoo always reminds her of it.

This tattoo also has a story behind it. He describes this arm as his "good arm" and the angel is holding his two children. This tattoo shows the bond between him and his children. It's not my favorite picture in this project, because it has a few technical problems.

This is the same guy as the photo above, but this is what he considers his "bad arm" As you can see it has apparently a bad hand of cards (i wouldn't really know, but i'm trusting him on this one) and you can also see the skull in the bottom right hand corner. I really like the composition of this picture, because you get a taste of eveything but the main focus is on the cards. The only problem i have with this photo is that the background might be too distracting.

I'm not sure about the story behind this tatto, but i really like the composition of the photo. Again i could've chosen a better background, but i love how you can almost see her face from the profile....but not quite.

This isn't my favorite photo either, because it's a little blurry.

This is one of my favorite tattoo's out of the bunch. Let me just say that the tattoo is on his back, since it seems that nobody could really figure out where it was. The tattoo itself is so different, and as my cousins would say "sick". Technically, photo-wise, the lighting is really good and it's one of the photo's that aren't blurry. So i'm really happy by how it turned out.

Again, the tattoo to me looks grainy, but the same person tattooed this as the other one above (see Christa). So i'm not sure if ISO was off, or it was just the style of tattoo.

I really like this photo for some reason. IT's a little blurry, but i love the composition of it. I love how you get some of her hand in the picture, so your eye wanders around the picture, but always ends up coming back to the tattoo.


I absolutly adore this photo, and the story behind it. The quick story is that my cousin, who is a soldier who is fighting in Iraq got this illegally in Iraq. It's in latin and stands for some group i think, but i can't quite remember. Anyway, photo-wise, the light might not be perfect, but the focus is great, which makes me amazingly happy because i didn't get a ton of photos in focus.

I really love this light in this photo, and in my opinion the tattoo itself is very beautiful. I don't really know the story behind this tattoo, but as an image, it's one of my better ones. The focus in this image is also clear.

This really sums up my project, and i had a lot of fun shooting it. I'm a little disappointed technically because of the blurryness of some of the photos. But i think this project really reaches out emotionally, and that's what i really love about it.
